Why we call it "Mickey's Place"
J.T. Mickey Place (1909-2002) was the UPEI Student Union General Manager from 1972-1982
Mickey Place was a tireless supporter and highly respected member of the UPEI Campus Community. Following a lengthy career with CHTN Radio and Television, Mickey became the first General Manager of the UPEI Student Union, serving in that capacity from 1972-1982.
He was an active proponent of all campus activities. He was a long-time volunteer for UPEI’s Shinerama campaign, an avid varsity sports fan, wrote weekly sports columns in the UPEI Student Newspaper, and above all, was an enthusiastic advocate and friend of UPEI students. In his honour, the ‘J.T. Mickey Place Awards’ have been presented annually to deserving UPEI varsity athletes since 1982, and a basketball tournament that bears his name is hosted each year at UPEI.
Mickey received an Honourary Degree from the University in 1984, and was recognized by the Student Union with the inaugural Distinguished Honourary Member Award in 1989.
