UPEISU Campus Pub Set for Renovations

UPEISU Campus Pub Set for Renovations

At the December 3, 2017 University of Prince Edward Island Student Union (UPEISU) council meeting, council voted to move forward with renovations to the UPEISU campus pub, The Wave. Since 2002, The Wave has occupied a large restaurant-style space in the W. A. Murphy Student Centre.

The renovations, which were first discussed during the summer of 2015, were further investigated by the New Initiatives and Future Directions (NIFD) committee, a subcommittee of student council. The committee, in conjunction with UPEI Facilities Management, researched costs and potential contractors. Additionally, the committee consulted with students via online survey to see if the renovations were feasible and favourable to the student body.

Current plans for the campus pub have Mickey’s Place, the UPEISU coffee kiosk, combining with the bar space. The UPEISU Vice-President Finance, William McGuigan, speaks to this combination, as well as his views on the renovations: “Renovating the campus pub is a long overdue project that the UPEI Student Union is delighted to see happen. Going ahead with this project will benefit the entire UPEI community and foster pride on our campus for years to come. This investment into our campus pub will increase student engagement and will allow us to put on bigger events such as our annual ‘Beach Blast’ event, but also cater to smaller events such as trivia nights.”

The UPEISU is currently waiting on the approval of a loan to begin construction beginning in May 2018, and will keep the campus community informed of the results of the loan request moving forward.
