Financial Literacy

The UPEI Student Union strongly believes that financial literacy is an essential aspect for students to be aware of to maintain being financially healthy. This section provides several tips,  resources and more to help you, folks, in terms of finance.

Simple ways to save money

1. Textbooks are just as good the second or third time around

  • There are several UPEI Facebook groups where students post about books they are selling at the beginning of each semester.
  • Some of these groups are UPEI International Students, UPEI Campus Life, etc.
  • It is also a good idea to join a club related to your faculty and ask folks there if they are selling the books you are looking for there.

TIP: Finding one friend in class and splitting the cost of one online book can help you save a lot of money.

2. Consider opening a savings account.

  • It is always nice to have a few bucks set aside in case of an emergency.
  • With every paycheque, consider adding some money in your savings account- it does not have yo be a lot. Adding $5 every time can go a long way!

Note: We recognize that this step might not be applicable to everyone depending on their financial status.

Tips we've received from students

1. Make use of student discounts.

  • Bulk Barn provides a student discount of 10% on Wednesdays if you show your student ID.
  • Craving fast food? Dairy Queen provides students with a student discount of 10% every day! You just have to show your student ID.
  • Shopping at Superstore? On Tuesdays, you can get 10% of your total cost in PC optimum points that you can use towards your future purchases.
