FALL 2026 OPT-OUT

The opt-out form will be open Monday, August 17th, until Friday, September 25th, 2026, at 4 PM AST. After this date, students registered full-time in fall 2026 will no longer be eligible to opt out for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The opt-out request form will be available at upeisu.drawbridge.ca; it is required to show proof of being insured on an equivalent insurance policy; please ensure that your name is clearly visible on any proof that is uploaded to the opt-out request. (Adequate proof of coverage can include a benefit card, letter from your insurance provider, etc.)
When you complete the request to opt out, ensure that you see a submission number & keep a record of that until any fee(s) are removed from your student account.
IF A SUBMISSION NUMBER IS NOT PROVIDED ON SCREEN, YOUR OPT OUT REQUEST WAS NOT SUBMITTED.
NOTE:
  • PEI Health cards are sufficient to opt out of the international medical coverage only, not extended health & dental coverage(s).
  • You should see the refund to your student account within 10 business days of your opt out being approved.
  • The opt out procedure must be completed each year in the FALL term.

FALL 2026 ADD DEPENDENTS

The add dependents form will be open Monday, August 17th, until Friday, September 25th, 2026, at 4 PM AST. After this date, students registered full-time in fall 2026 will no longer be eligible to add dependents to their insurance policy for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The request to add dependents form will be available at upeisu.drawbridge.ca.
When you complete the request to add dependent(s), ensure that you see a submission number on screen. Upon your application being reviewed and approved, any applicable fee(s) will be added to your student account within 10 business days.
The fees to add dependent(s) to insurance for September 1st, 2026 to August 31st, 2027 coverage are below:
Health: $328
Dental: $308
International Medical: $1500 (applicable to international students ONLY)
Fees are a one time payment in the fall term. Fees are the total cost to add dependents, NOT a per person rate.
NOTE:
  • You may select to add dependent(s) to one, two, or all policies that are applicable to the primary insured (student).
  • The request to Add Dependents procedure must be completed each year in the FALL term.
  • Dependent(s) insurance expires each year on August 31st, unless otherwise stated.

Post Doctoral Fellows (Fellowship Stream)

Post Doctoral Fellows (Fellowship Stream) (PDF’s) are eligible to enrol in the UPEI Student Union insurance policy pending they provide the necessary information to opt in and pay the application fee.

Please note that insurance cannot be backdated, therefore, PDF’s should be in contact with the Plan Administrator prior to needing insurance coverage.

Insurance coverage terminates each year on August 31st, unless otherwise noted. PDF’s are responsible for renewing coverage each year, pending they would like to stay insured.

In order to be eligible for this policy, you must be: under the age of 65, covered under a Provincial Health Care Plan or equivalent, and you must pay the applicable fee(s) before any related deadline(s).

If a post-doc is Canadian, they would only be eligible to acquire the extended health and/or dental insurance; not the international medical policy.

If a post-doc is international, they would be eligible to acquire the international medical plan, as well as the extended health and/or dental insurance. The international medical policy acts in place of a PEI health card; however, it does have certain limitations and restrictions, so it is advised that anyone apply for a PEI health card, should they be eligible to do so. (This policy is only applicable for international students)

PDF’s are not required to opt into all of the applicable policies; for example, should someone solely want dental coverage, they are free to only opt into that portion of the insurance.

Please contact admin@upeisu.ca for information on pricing, as fees are subject to change each year.
