Re: Loss of International Student Advisor Position
Dear President Rodgers,
The UPEI Student Union (UPEISU) is writing to express our concern over the decision to no longer provide licensed immigration support, which has been especially crucial to our international student community. Currently, UPEI students are regularly updated on the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) changes through emails and monthly info-sessions and are offered one-on-one support. These efforts have helped students stay informed and navigate complex immigration processes. This loss will directly impact students’ ability to stay in Canada and succeed at UPEI.
It is evident that international students cannot afford to lose this support. If UPEI cannot maintain this in-house role, we urge the University to consider alternative solutions, perhaps integrating these services into another department or position. With rising financial stress and the abrupt changes to IRCC policies, many international students are already under immense uncertainty and pressure. Without expert guidance, our students will face even more significant challenges navigating their academic and post-graduation journeys.
Immigration services have always been in high demand at UPEI. Within 24 hours of the announcement, all the remaining appointment slots were filled, demonstrating the urgent need for these services. The recent IRCC changes have confused many international students about their future in Canada and damaged our post-secondary brand. Losing important services like this will only worsen our ability to recruit and retain international students.
Attached is a petition signed by UPEI students concerned about losing access to this support. We are requesting a meeting with you and relevant representatives to discuss this matter further and explore solutions to ensure international students continue receiving the help they need.
Thank you for your time and attention. We look forward to working with you on a solution that supports the well-being of our international student community.
Sincerely,
UPEI Student Council
