Statement from the UPEISU Regarding Love and Sex Week

The UPEI Student Union would like to sincerely apologize for any hurt or offense that has been caused by our “Love and Sex Week” campaign during the week of February 12-16, 2018. Although we intended the campaign to be inclusive and fun for all students, clearly some events fell short of inclusion and diversity. In particular, the UPEISU understands that Love and Sex Trivia on February 14, 2018 was particularly problematic. The heteronormativity facilitated at this event is not reflective of the values of the UPEISU and we sincerely regret any harm that was caused.

The UPEISU had been making efforts this year to make Love and Sex Week more inclusive, and although we believe some progress was made, we acknowledge that there is still a lot of work to be done. The UPEISU continually strives for a campus community that is safe and welcoming for everyone, and our events and campaigns must always reflect these values.

Moving forward, the UPEISU will be making every effort to ensure that these past events are investigated thoroughly, and we will be following up with the Queer Collective and other groups on campus for additional feedback.

We will also be taking this opportunity to reach out to our campus community to learn more about how we can make our events more inclusive moving forward. We are encouraging students to reach out to our Vice-President Student Life, Megan Rix, or to their Council representative if they wish to provide feedback. All contact information for UPEISU representatives can be found on our website. The UPEISU is also currently drafting an anonymous feedback form which will be circulated to the campus community.
