Students Need Support: The UPEISU Calls for Reversal of Internship Program Pause

Charlottetown, PE- May 27, 2026

The University of Prince Edward Island Student Union (UPEISU) exists to represent students’ interests and enhance the overall student experience at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI). As part of that mission, youth employment has always been, and will continue to be, a central concern for the Student Union.

In light of the recent announcement to pause the P.E.I. Regarding the Public Service Commission’s internship program for recent graduates, the UPEISU emphasizes the importance of maintaining these initiatives. Internship programs play a vital role in supporting students’ transition from university into the workforce, particularly at a time when labour market conditions have become increasingly fragile.

Post‑university transition experiences are essential for helping recent graduates enter the job market with confidence. These programs not only provide meaningful professional development opportunities but also serve as an important incentive to retain newly trained talent in the Prince Edward Island economy.

Statistics Canada (2026) reported that “the youth (15 to 24 years) unemployment rate rose by 0.5 percentage points to 14.3% in April, as employment varied little and the number of young people searching for work edged up (+14,000; +3…).” This trend shows the need for stable, accessible pathways that help young people secure employment and contribute to the province’s long‑term economic health.

Given the financial pressures that students already face, including rising tuition costs, increasing rent, and higher prices for necessities such as food, the decision to pause the internship program adds yet another burden during an already challenging time. After investing so much in their education, students should not have to worry that meaningful employment may be out of reach.

The UPEISU urges the Government of Prince Edward Island to reconsider its decision and reinstate the internship program to ensure that recent graduates receive the support they need to build successful careers in our province.
