Success of the Wellness Wallets Program to Strengthen Student Wellbeing and Food Security

Charlottetown, PE – April 1, 2026

The UPEI Student Union (UPEISU) is proud of the success of Wellness Wallets, an innovative program designed to support student wellbeing through practical skills development, food security initiatives, and accessible wellness resources.

Developed and launched under the leadership of the 2025/2026 President & CEO, Luciana Quiroa Paredes, the program represents a major achievement for the UPEISU in advancing student-focused, impact-driven programming. Wellness Wallets was made possible through funding, specifically $7500, secured from the Live Well PEI Community Catalyst Grant, administered by the Department of Health and Wellness.

Wellness Wallets consisted of a five-session workshop program to equip students with tangible, real-world skills that support both their physical and mental well-being. The program addressed key areas such as food security, mindful eating, and stress reduction, while creating opportunities for students to engage in meaningful, community-based learning.

Through interactive sessions, students gained practical skills, such as preparing simple, affordable meals and building healthier daily habits with direct support. Participants benefited from incentives, including meal vouchers and opportunities to win financial prizes, which helped reduce barriers to participation and reinforce the program’s accessibility.

Wellness Wallets reflects our commitment to supporting students in a holistic and practical way,” said Luciana Quiroa Paredes, President & CEO of the UPEI Student Union. “By combining skill-building, accessible resources, and financial support, this program empowers students to take control of their wellbeing and succeed both inside and outside the classroom.”

Funded through the Live Well PEI Community Catalyst Grant, Wellness Wallets aligned with provincial priorities to promote healthier lifestyles and reduce barriers to well-being. The program directly contributed to building a stronger, more resilient campus community by ensuring students have access to the tools and knowledge they need to thrive.

The UPEI Student Union represents undergraduate students at the University of Prince Edward Island and is committed to improving student life through advocacy, services, and innovative programming. Through initiatives like Wellness Wallets, the UPEISU continues to lead in creating inclusive, supportive, and forward-thinking campus experiences.

We congratulate the President & CEO, Luciana, for successfully executing this program!
