08 Apr The Shared Space Initiative- Support for International Students
Charlottetown, PE – April 8, 2026
The UPEI Student Union (UPEISU) launched The Shared Space, an initiative designed to support international students through connections, information sharing, and community-building opportunities.
The program was made possible by $5,000 in provincial funding from the Government of Prince Edward Island’s Anti-Racism Grant program, which recognized the UPEISU’s leadership in advancing inclusive, equity-focused programming on campus. The funding was secured and successfully led by the UPEISU President, Luciana Quiroa Paredes and Vice President Academic, Deanelle Sotiar.
“This program highlights the importance of creating inclusive environments where students feel welcomed, connected, and supported beyond their academic experience,” said Luciana Quiroa Paredes.
Through the Shared Space initiative, we organized, hosted, and facilitated three informational sessions for international students, followed by a closing networking event connecting students with professionals.
Designed as a multi-session program, The Shared Space focused on:
- Creating accessible platforms for information-sharing and dialogue;
- Supporting international student transition and integration;
- Building connections between students and broader community networks.
“The Shared Space reflects our commitment to ensuring that all students feel supported, connected, and empowered within our campus community,” said Deanelle Sotiar.
The program reflected a growing need for targeted supports that enhance student belonging and participation, particularly for those navigating new academic, cultural, and professional environments.
By creating opportunities for dialogue, learning, and networking, the UPEISU will continue to actively build a more inclusive and welcoming environment at UPEI.
