Tuition Relief Fund to Address Student Financial Barriers

Tuition Relief Fund to Address Student Financial Barriers

Charlottetown, PE – March 27, 2026

The UPEI Student Union, through the Office of the President for 2025/26, led by Luciana Quiroa Paredes, launched the Tuition Relief Fund, a targeted initiative to address the growing financial challenges students face.

Created in response to rising costs and increasing financial pressures, the Tuition Relief Fund filled a critical gap in student support by providing direct, needs-based assistance specifically for tuition costs, an area where dedicated support is limited.

As part of its initial rollout, the fund distributed $2,600 in financial support, awarding approximately $866 to 3 of 108 students to help offset outstanding tuition balances and ensure they can continue their studies.

Recipients were selected through a confidential, needs-based process, ensuring that funding is directed to students experiencing genuine financial hardship, including those facing unexpected or emergency circumstances.

Funded through an allocation from the Office of the President, the Tuition Relief Fund was implemented as a pilot initiative.

The program was designed not only to provide immediate support, but also to inform future efforts by the Student Union to expand financial assistance and develop longer-term solutions to affordability challenges.
