UPEI Student Union Advocates for Fair Tuition Rebates in Response to Labour Strike Impact on Students

The UPEI Student Union is frustrated with the tuition rebate amounts announced by the University in an email release sent out earlier this week. The amount that has been refunded to students does not adequately reflect the amount of time and education that has been lost as a result of the strike. This decision has had a direct and negative impact on students.

The Student Union’s recommendation to the University was to reimburse students proportionally based on the amount of tuition they paid and the number of classes they are enrolled in, giving more substantial rebates to international students and students with higher course loads. While we are pleased that international students are receiving a more significant amount to compensate for their increased tuition costs, we are frustrated that higher course loads are not being similarly recognized with a higher rebate.

We will continue to lobby the University to add additional supplementary funds to the Student Impact Payments. If you would like to voice your opinions regarding the University’s tuition rebate amounts, we encourage you to share them in a respectful manner by contacting the University directly at this email address: vpar@upei.ca.

We would like to extend our best wishes to everyone and hope that you are managing as well as possible.

Sincerely,

The UPEISU Team
