UPEI Student Union Applauds Amendments to FOIPP at PEI Legislature

The UPEI Student Union was pleased to see the amendments of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP Act) at the PEI Legislature on Tuesday June 12, 2018. These amendments will bring post-secondary institutions under this Act.

“As the only province in Canada where the FOIPP Act did not apply to post-secondary institutions, it was time for PEI to modernize our institutions- UPEI, Holland College and College de I’lle- to national standards,” says Emma Drake, Vice President Academic and External.

The UPEI Student Union has been actively advocating for the FOIPP Act amendments since 2014, and released a Government Submission to this regard earlier this year.

“The Student Union believes that, as a post-secondary institution obtaining approximately half of its revenue from government funding, UPEI must make its information available to the public, who thus have a right to this information,” Drake further elaborates.

“We were excited to see the amendments being passed at the PEI Legislature,” states William McGuigan, President. “This will make information more accessible and affordable to UPEI students.”
