UPEISU Celebrates First Executive of All Women on Its 50th Anniversary

August 29, 2019 – Charlottetown, PE

This upcoming year’s UPEI Student Union’s Executive comprises of President Emma Drake, Vice President Academic & External Sweta Daboo, Vice President Student Life Tessa Rogers, and Vice President Finance & Administration Keesha Ryan. This is the first Executive comprised of all women in the 50 years of UPEISU history.

“We are excited to see four women in different executive positions working together for the first time in the UPEISU,” says Emma Drake, President of the UPEI Student Union.  “The fact that this celebration coincides with our 50th anniversary makes the occasion even more special to us.”

In 1969, when the University of Prince Edward Island was founded, so was the UPEI Student Union, led by its first President Mr. John Keaveny. Since then, roughly 30% of all UPEI Student Union Executives have been women, specifically in the role of President, this ratio is approximately 20%.

“We are looking forward to the year ahead of us as we continue to represent all of our students. We hope this will encourage more students from diverse backgrounds to pursue leadership positions at UPEI,” further says Drake.

This 2019 Executive Team marks the next phase of the UPEISU history. This Fall, the UPEISU will offer different programs aimed at supporting students from different backgrounds who wish to get involved on campus.
